Side Sex Positions: Every Variation Explained
Side sex positions keep both partners horizontal, reducing joint load while preserving penetration depth. Every variation ranked by mechanics and angle.
Side sex positions are any configuration in which at least one partner lies on their side during penetration. The defining mechanic is horizontal orientation: neither partner bears full bodyweight on their joints, the hips stay relatively neutral, and pelvic tilt can be adjusted by rotating slightly forward or back without shifting the whole body. That geometry makes this category one of the lowest-exertion configurations available — useful in the morning, useful late in a session, and particularly useful when load-bearing positions cause hip, knee, or back discomfort.
The low-exertion label does not mean low sensation. Entry angle in side positions is consistently oblique relative to the vaginal canal's natural forward tilt, which means the anterior vaginal wall — the G-spot region — receives contact on most thrusts without either partner adjusting. Leg position and hip rotation fine-tune the depth and where along the shaft friction concentrates. Closing the top partner's thighs in positions like the Corkscrew narrows the channel, increasing pressure along the full length. Opening the legs widens access and softens that compression.
Spooning is the foundational entry point: both partners face the same direction, pelvis to pelvis, with the penetrating partner behind. Depth is moderate, thrust arc is short, and both partners' hands remain free. The position is also the most commonly cited option for comfortable side sex because the bodyweight alignment lets couples sustain it for extended periods without fatigue accumulating in the arms or knees.
Pregnancy changes the geometry calculation significantly. As the abdomen grows, face-to-face positions can become impractical and rear-entry positions with a forward-curled spine put pressure on the belly. Lateral orientation with a small pillow under the bump resolves both problems — which is why side positions feature prominently in guides to sex during pregnancy. The shallow-to-moderate depth inherent to most side configurations also reduces the cervical impact concern that comes with deep-penetration positions.
The other end of the spectrum — positions chosen specifically because effort is minimal — is covered in lazy sex positions, where several side variations rank near the top. Energy expenditure in a well-executed Spooning session is comparable to a brisk walk rather than a sprint. The sensation-to-effort ratio is what the category is optimized for.
The five variations below span the range from pure horizontal to semi-perpendicular. Each shifts angle, depth, or friction in a specific way.

Spooning
Both partners lie on their sides facing the same direction, with the penetrating partner curled behind. The hips of the penetrating partner press against the receiving partner's glutes, which limits thrust arc to roughly 3–5 inches — enough for consistent anterior wall contact, not enough for deep cervical impact. Entry angle is slightly posterior-superior, meaning the penis or dildo presses toward the front wall on each forward movement. The receiving partner can tilt their pelvis forward to increase that angle or lean back to flatten it and reduce depth. Arms are free on both sides, which makes sustained manual clitoral stimulation straightforward throughout.
Corkscrew
The receiving partner lies on their side with legs together and thighs closed; the penetrating partner kneels or stands behind them, oriented slightly more vertically. Because the receiving partner's thighs are pressed together, the vaginal opening narrows and friction distributes across the labia and along the full shaft rather than concentrating at the tip. Penetration angle depends on how far the penetrating partner leans forward — upright creates downward pressure on the posterior wall; leaning forward shifts contact toward the anterior wall. This is one of the few side positions that meaningfully changes its sensation profile based on the standing partner's torso angle.
Scissors
Both partners lie on their sides facing each other with legs interleaved. The precise interlocking angle varies, but the standard configuration has one partner's upper leg across the other's hip, which brings the genitals into contact with a grinding, oscillating motion rather than a thrusting one. Penetration in the conventional sense is possible but shallow; the primary friction is external, along the vulva and between the bodies. Clitoral stimulation is direct because the bodies press together through the pelvic region throughout. Hip circles tend to be more effective here than back-and-forth thrust.
T-Bone
One partner lies on their back while the other lies on their side and enters perpendicularly, forming a rough T shape. The entry angle is lateral — the shaft travels across the vaginal axis rather than along it — which shifts pressure to the lateral vaginal walls rather than the anterior or posterior. Depth is limited by the geometry to around 60–70% of maximum. The partner on their side can rock forward and back to vary angle without the prone partner needing to move at all. This is the configuration that requires the least movement from the receiving partner across the whole category.
Pretzel
The receiving partner lies on their side; the penetrating partner straddles the lower leg and lifts the upper leg, bringing the hips into a partially open orientation. This hybrid configuration combines the side-lying body position with a hip angle closer to missionary, which allows deeper penetration than pure side positions — the leg lift opens the pelvis and reduces the restriction that horizontal thigh alignment creates. Thrust arc is longer than in Spooning. The lifted-leg position also exposes more of the vulva for external stimulation, though the penetrating partner's hands are occupied maintaining the leg hold unless a pillow or bolster is used to support the upper leg.
